Your Go-To Guide for Shopping Minimalist Swimwear

Your Go-To Guide for Shopping Minimalist Swimwear | The UNDONE

If you like to celebrate the onset of summer by investing in new bathers, you’ll know how tricky it can be to find the perfect minimalist swimsuit amongst rails of eye-popping prints and overwhelmingly bright colours. As in the rest of your wardrobe, investing in classic cuts and timeless colours means your togs will last you longer. That said, finding a classic black swimsuit that fits well is no mean feat, especially if you’re shopping for larger bust-size swimwear. Happily, there are several minimalist swim brands out there that stay true to timeless style. (And, surprise!, two of our favourites are available at The Undone.) No matter which you opt for, it’s all about choosing trend-resistant shapes, quality fabrics and neutral colours for maximum longevity.

Here are the classic swimwear styles we recommend investing in.

The black one-piece swimsuit

A classic one-piece swimsuit is perfect for those times you’d prefer to show a little less skin. Choose a scoop or square neckline to offer support and flatter your décolletage. Black is always chic, but navy and chocolate also work well. Bonus: opt for a high-quality fabric, and you’ve got the option to wear it as a bodysuit too.

The staple black bikini

A go-to for many (most minimalists will own at least one black bikini), a timeless two-piece swimsuit can last for years. Look for bikini sets that flatter your body, or go for separates cut in the same fabric to mix and match. (Form and Fold does this especially well for fuller bust swimwear – their swim tops go up to a G cup.)

The supportive bikini top

Buyers of D+ swimwear in particular will know how important it can be to feel as supported in a bikini as they would a bra. If you prefer this kind of support, look for top styles with inbuilt scaffolding to sculpt and add structure. Another tip: brands that take cup size into consideration will be your best bet for a comfy fit.

The classic swim bottoms

Swimwear bottoms come in all shapes and sizes, and it can be hard to narrow down which fit you prefer. An easy way to do this is by choosing styles that mirror your favourite underwear. In general, a high-rise bottom is perfect for fuller coverage, whereas a brief or high-cut style works best if you’d prefer a little less coverage.

The chic cover-up

In addition to helping you keep the sun off your skin, beach cover ups can be super-versatile. Throwing a neutral sarong or crisp oversized shirt over the top of your swimsuit also allows you to head out to lunch directly after the beach without getting changed. (They’re considered must-have resort wear for good reason!)
