The ‘90s-Inspired Styles We’re Wearing Now

If the fashion world’s obsession with ‘90s style feels never-ending that’s because much of it seems to have transcended trend status. A constant presence over the past few years, ‘90s fashion offers both fun (see: cargo pants, bucket hats and chokers) and forever pieces (high rise, straight-leg jeans, perfectly fitted tees and sleek slip dresses). Unsurprisingly it’s the latter that have rapidly become wardrobe essentials for style minimalists. It makes sense considering that the ‘90s, defined by low-key style, heavily influenced our once-formal sartorial standards, making casual pieces like denim, tank tops and sneakers cool-girl staples. Now an essential pragmatic element in any capsule wardrobe, we couldn’t imagine getting dressed without them.

Here are some of the ‘90s-inspired looks inspiring our style this season, and how to wear them.

Low-rise skirts

A ‘90s-inspired mainstay, low-rise skirts have a built-in ease about them – pair with a simple tank or t-shirt for timeless style. Not keen on baring your midriff? Tuck in your top or lay it just over the waistband instead.

Mini and maxi skirts

Whether you prefer a shorter or longer hemline, these ‘90s-inspired skirts are all about tailoring. Opt for sculpted shapes and stay away from flowy fabrics. They’re best worn with a fitted top for a lean silhouette.

Slip dresses

A forever favourite that can be dressed up or down, the slip dress is a true wardrobe workhorse. Wear as is, or throw a button-up shirt on top for more coverage. Dress up with heeled sandals or pair with flats or sneakers.

Easy tailoring

Clean lines and minimal detailing are a key feature of ‘90s style. For summer, embrace the versatility of warm weather suiting in fresh shapes, like St Agni’s Linen Square Neck Top and matching Mid Rise Straight Pants.

90s-inspired denim

The decade of denim, the 1990’s saw jeans hit peak popularity. Today’s inspired-by styles feature minimal stretch and longer, looser legs for a relaxed silhouette. (Read our tips on how to style long, loose jeans, here.)
