If you suddenly feel compelled to ditch your usual high-waisted, straight-legged jeans for a more relaxed, 1990s-inspired fit, you’re not alone. From Bella Hadid to Hailey Beiber, the fashion set are making a compelling case for the comeback of loose-fit jeans. The trend speaks to our current collective obsession with all things fashion nostalgia. Plus, baggy jeans are fun! They’re comfy! They’re made for living your life in.

The thing is, if styled the wrong way, they’re also at risk of becoming the kind of purchase you wear exactly once then relegate to the back of your wardrobe. But because we’re about the kind of effortless minimalism that makes getting dressed simpler, we’re only interested in investing in pieces we’ll wear for years to come.

So, can you wear 2022’s biggest denim trend in a way that stays true to a classic style ethos? You sure can. (Just not when paired with an equally trend-driven ‘90s cropped tank and tiny oval sunglasses.) Here are our tips.

Tip 1: Choose classic colours

First thing’s first, if you’re going to partake in the loose fit jeans trend, we recommend selecting denim in a timeless colour like blue, black or white. Avoid distressing, rips and whiskering – these details will date quickly.

Tip 2: Keep the styling simple

Team baggy jeans with your elevated wardrobe essentials and you can’t go wrong. Think: classic blue jeans with a relaxed white t-shirt and blazer. For a modern take, try white jeans with a slim cream knit tucked in.

Tip 3: Consider the proportions

When it comes to styling ‘90s-style jeans, the rules of balancing an outfit apply – if you’re wearing a looser bottom, keep the top half tailored. If in doubt, leave your oversized tops in the closet and go for a slimmer fit.

Tip 4: Elevate with accessories

Use your accessories to add modern touches. A belt gives definition at the waist or hips as well as personality. A minimal sandal or low heel adds femininity and helps to dress up baggy jeans which can read overly casual.

Tip 5: Find the Style That's Right For You

The loose jean trend ranges from McHammer balloon proportions to more functional. We love the RE/DONE 90's loose jean for its longer loose fit while still staying relatively close to our high rise straight go-to. Find the style you'll wear on repeat while still being able to dabble in the trend.
